Tutoring for Children with Dyslexia
What is Orton-Gillingham?Orton-Gillingham is a multisensory approach to teaching reading for children with dyslexia. This method of instruction combines the structure of the English language with visual, auditory and kinesthetic techniques. It was developed in the 1930’s by neurologist Dr. Samuel T. Orton, psychologist Anna Gillingham and educator Bessie Stillman. The program is designed for students to continuously build upon reading, writing and spelling skills.
When tutoring students, I combine the traditional Orton-Gillingham approach along with instruction that is based upon the Science of Reading latest research. Children receive instruction in phonemic and phonological awareness, writing, decoding, comprehension and reading fluency. They learn phonemes (letter sounds), morphemes (prefixes, suffixes and roots) and common spelling rules. |
Orton-Gillingham Tutoring ScheduleRecommended instruction consists of 2-3, one hour tutoring sessions each week.
During each session your child will blend, segment and delete phonemes; learn irregular words (sight words); decode words, phrases and sentences; write words, phrases and sentences and practice fluency. Please call or email if your child is having difficulty learning sounds or making progress with reading and writing. We can discuss which approach would best meet your child's needs. I look forward to hearing from you! |
